A leading local manufacturer has launched a soap primarily aimed at consumers in mosquito-infested areas, adding to the fight against malaria in the country.
Pwani Oil Limited’s mosquito-repellent Detrex Citronella soap will retail for 30 Shillings each, making it affordable for the average Kenyan household, especially in areas prone to malaria and dengue fever.
Enriched with citronella, a natural ingredient known to be effective at repelling mosquitoes and other insects, the soap can be formulated into soaps, sprays, lotions, and candles.
Citronella works by repelling (not killing) insects – by masking human and animal odors that are attractive to insects – making it difficult for mosquitoes to find their food target.
“Soap is an easily available product that can be found in every household. This makes it an effective tool in the fight against malaria, “said Commercial Director Rajul Malde.
“Ending malaria is an international health goal, and making this type of soap available to vulnerable populations is one step toward that goal.”
Malaria is responsible for 10,000 deaths each year in Kenya, according to the US Center for Disease Control.
Dengue fever is a tropical disease caused by the dengue virus, which is spread by the Aedes mosquito.
Sporadic outbreaks of the disease have been reported in Kenya in recent years.
Most of the dengue fever outbreaks in the country coincide with the long rainy season, which is known to fuel the breeding of mosquitoes and other harmful insects.
Some studies have shown that mosquito repellent soap is an affordable and accessible way to fight malaria, especially in remote areas where other measures are difficult to find.
Citronella Fortified Detrex is the latest innovation from Pwani Oil, a Mombasa-based edible oils, soaps, and detergents maker focused on innovations that improve the health and lifestyle of consumers.
The soap has already been recommended by the Kenya Professional Nurses Association.
“As a company, our approach to innovation is focused on the consumer to promote happy and healthy lives. We would like to thank KPNA for this confirmation, ”said Malde.
Detrex Citronella is the latest addition to the company’s personal life care segment, which also includes the Diva and Sawa soap brands.
The international community is committed to ending malaria by 2030 under the Sustainable Development Goals.
