SINGAPORE – The National Environmental Agency (NEA) will be handing out kits to people living on land to make their homes “mosquito-proof”.

A press release on Thursday (November 19) stated that “the topography of country houses is more favorable for mosquito breeding than private apartments and HDB apartments”. Its officials have found more cases of mosquito breeding and dengue fever in country houses than in homes.

The kit contains an information leaflet about common mosquito breeding sites in country houses. a piece of larval killer (Bti Dunk) that residents can place in gutters, drains or water fountains; and visual reminders, including weatherproof stickers and fridge magnets.

The agency said that of the 2,942 dengue clusters, 2,836, or 96 percent, are no longer active this year.

But it added that “the total number of reported dengue clusters remains high across the island”.

There are currently 106 active clusters, the largest of which is infected in Opera Estate with 121 infected people.

Although the number of weekly infections has dropped to less than a fifth from the record high of 1,792 infections in July, the weekly number of dengue cases – 355 last week – is still much higher than usual, according to the NEA.

It said, “This is worrying as we may enter next year with an atypically high number of dengue cases, potentially leading to another dengue outbreak next year.”

It urges people to fight dengue fever by spraying insecticides in dark corners of the house, regularly applying insect repellant, and wearing long-sleeved tops and long pants. You should also make sure that their homes and their surroundings are free from standing water.
