A number of residents in Serere and Soroti districts have missed the long-life insecticide mosquito nets that are being distributed by the government as part of a new campaign codenamed “Under-the-Net”. The government procured 75.5 million mosquito nets to be distributed across the country in six waves.

The Serere, Soroti, Kaberamaido and Kalaki districts in the Teso sub-region are among the 25 districts that began distributing mosquito nets last week. This was an important government move to protect citizens from malaria, the leading cause of hospital visits and deaths. across the country. Up to 4,371,259 mosquito nets were sent to the region.

Teresa Ikiror Otilo, 76, a resident of Acaboi-Aoja in Gweri District, Soroti District, says she has been waiting in vain for mosquito nets for the past week. Unlike in the past when every community had a distribution center, this time recipients were told to wait from home.

Ikiror says the distribution was selective, omitting a number of households. She is concerned that she will still have to sleep under a tattered mosquito net.

Serere district authorities are now considering distributing the additional 515 bales of mosquito nets mistakenly delivered to the district by the National Medical Store-NMS.

Gabriel Otiira, the deputy chief administrative officer in Serere, says the district received a total of 5,857 bales of more than 515, according to planned microdata, using projections from the number of households and population size. However, he notes that only 85 percent of the population in the entire district was served.
