(MENAFN – Khaleej Times) Sharjah community teams launched a three-day mosquito control campaign on Wednesday, spraying pesticides on areas likely to become breeding grounds for insects and mosquitoes this winter season.

Working with the Department of Health and Prevention’s National Center for Malaria Vector Control, the community is taking all necessary precautions to prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases.

More than 96 employees and supervisors were assigned to the campaign, said Wisal Jasim Habash, director of the environmental services department.

All workers were given safety tools and other equipment, including 24 hand sprayers, 24 sprayers, five vehicle-mounted micro-sprayers, and 24 bags of mosquito larvae inspection carts. 80 liters of special pesticides were prepared for the trip.

Hassan Al Tafaq, director of the community’s agriculture and environment department, said they had developed an action plan aimed at getting rid of pests, insects and mosquitoes across the city. The team also mapped areas likely to become breeding grounds.

“During the campaign, the community will also educate the public on how to get red from mosquitoes in their areas,” said Al Tafaq.

He added that a weekly schedule has been created for the spray team, targeting areas with standing water, water storage barrels, planting trays, water tanks, discarded pots, water ponds and drainage holes.
