The Singapore Crimson Cross helps flood-affected communities in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam – Cambodia

Singapore, October 20, 2020 – In response to the heavy rains and floods that have affected communities in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, the Singapore Red Cross is donating $ 75,000 ($ 25,000) to the Cambodia Red Cross, Laos Red Cross and the Red Cross Cross of Vietnam are performing disaster relief and recovery operations. The contribution will be used for emergency aid (rice, instant noodles, canned fish and soy sauce) and non-food aid supplies (mosquito net and blanket), water treatment systems and disaster prevention measures. as well as short-term restoration projects such as the renovation of latrines and livelihood support (agriculture and livestock) for those affected.

Mr. Benjamin William, Secretary General and CEO of the Singapore Red Cross, said: “Our thoughts go with the families who have lost loved ones and the survivors in evacuation camps. The disaster has exacerbated the challenging situation caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The situation is expected to worsen if the rain and strong winds continue and there is still a lot of uncertainty about the situation at this point. The spread of waterborne diseases is also a concern. Our national sister companies – the Cambodian Red Cross, the Laotian Red Cross and the Vietnamese Red Cross – work around the clock to distribute food packaging and provide health services, and support local authorities with evacuation and relief work. The Singapore Red Cross will continue to monitor the situation to assess what kind of assistance it can provide later. “

Since the beginning of October 2020, heavy rains have been recorded in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam due to the monsoon season. However, the arrival of tropical storms Nangka and Linfa has triggered flash floods and landslides. Destruction of a considerable number of buildings; including schools, homes and health centers; agricultural land and livestock.

As of October 18, 2020, Vietnam has recorded 64 deaths, 5 missing people, affecting approximately 5 million people. As of October 16, 2020, Cambodia had recorded 13 deaths and affected around 300,000 people. As of October 19, Laos recorded 1 death, 3 missing, affecting 37,000 people.
