Officers keep away from distributing mosquito nets due to poor pay

The mass distribution of state mosquito nets in the villages of Soroti district on Sunday came to a halt. Officials protested the poor pay.

In the western division, Soroti Municipality, the LC1 chairmen, data recorders, and village health teams dropped their tools and stored them at the division’s headquarters to explain why the payments per division were different.

Mr Gilbert Okello, data writer, said officials in charge of the malaria control program pay some officials Shs 22,000 while others receive Shs 12,000 but receive Shs 8,000.

“These people do opposing things. First they said we would get Shs 20,000 for data recorders, Shs 12,000 for safari per diems and Shs 10,000 daily transportation allowances, which we didn’t get, ”he said.

Mr. Emmanuel Odochu, a village health trainer in Mutukula Cell, Soroti Township, told the Daily Monitor Monday that the work is tedious but is getting little relief.

He said they need transportation and an allowance for lunch.
“How do you expect us to work? They expect us to distribute six bales of mosquito nets, which will be transported door to door at our expense, ”said Odochu.

Ms. Safina Basinka, the Western Monitoring and Assessment Department, said the ministry did not schedule lunches and door-to-door allowances.

She said they had recruited at least two data recorders, village health teams, and an LC1 in each village.
Dr. Elijah Ssemaganda, the deputy director of the health surveillance unit, said they are investigating a team from malaria control programs in Teso on allegations of poor pay.

“I warned you Friday that your sub-county superiors were acting to the contrary. You need to provide adequate information to the village officials who are distributing mosquito nets, ”said Dr. Ssemaganda.

“You should make the entire budget available to the technical staff and their managers. These people are intelligent and not desperate, open and give information to people, ”said Dr. Ssemaganda.
